Home made or Commercially Prepared |
At So Baby Organics, we understand that many parents do not always have the time, or indeed the inclination to spend hours and hours in the kitchen preparing batches of food for their little one. Even parents with the best of intentions of home cooking, will find times when they will need an alternative. The does not mean you have to compromise!
This is indeed the situation we were in, with our little one. We were happy to home cook everything, but there were always occasions when this would not be practical, or we just didn’t have the time. On looking round at the alternatives on the market we were bitterly disappointed. The meals tasted bland (not even with a natural taste), the texture was odd, and the nutritional value was poor – no wonder our little girl wouldn’t touch them – we wouldn’t, so why should she? To cut a long story short……this led to the birth of family run So Baby Organics. We hand produce each and every meal to the highest of standards, as you would at home, and we never, ever compromise on taste, quality of ingredients or nutritional content.
Frozen or Pasteurised?
This is why we are so different to any other baby meals you can buy. Most baby meals are pasteurised (and can therefore be kept at room temperature for years on end without going off). This is convenient for you, but not for baby! Pasteurisation leads to loss in flavour, and bland food will never develop a healthy appetite; this can lead to fussy eating patterns later on.
This is why we freeze all our meals immediately after cooking – not only is the food preserved naturally, it doesn’t remove any of the nutritional value or yummy taste.
Texture – natural or processed?
Texture is another important aspect to your baby’s food. Most commercially prepared baby foods have a most unnatural texture. This is the result of pasteurisation and also mass production. Many jars don’t have enough texture in them. Indeed, when texture is introduced, it is often a random lump in a puree base (as this is easier for manufacturers to produce). This can lead to your baby gagging on the unexpected lumps. This texture is not representative of “real food” and can lead to problems later – where your baby will need to be weaned again onto proper food with real texture and taste.
At So Baby Organics, all our meals are cooked slowly and then delicately hand blended to a perfect texture and consistency. This guarantees a lovely natural texture, and makes it easier for your little one to accept textured food early on.
Organic or non Organic?
For loads of information on this please refer to our organic section. As you may have gathered we are very passionate about this subject!
Organic is always best – but there are things you need to look out for.
Mass produced options, even when organic are invariably of poor quality. What is the use of buying an organic salmon pie meal if the fish content is only 4%? Mass producers are only interested in maximum profit, and only just meet the Baby Food Regulations for nutritional standards.
At So Baby Organics, not only do we use fresh, local organic produce – but lots of it!! (the salmon content in our salmon pie for example is 28%) We not only meet Baby Food Regulations, but smash them!
In summary, it is always good to home cook for your little one, but also to find a good supplier to buy meals from. This provides you with a varied menu for your little one, and also means that you never have to compromise on taste, texture, and importantly nutritional value.
